Tower 53 - Assists on 3-Alarm Norristown Fire
Mon. Nov 2nd 2020

At 13:15 hours, Tower 53 was dispatched with Station 27 (Norristown), Ladder 43 (Plymouth), Engine 32 (Bridgeport), Engine 56 (Upper Merion), Quint 61 (Norriton), and Quint 35 (Conshochocken) on the 1st Alarm Assignment for a reported dwelling fire in the 700 block of Kohn Street in Norristown. Montgomery County 911 indicated multiple callers reporting smoke and flames from a vacant row home.

Norristown Fire Department's Assistant 27 was enroute moments after dispatch reporting visible smoke in the air from the other side of the town. The "Working Fire" dispatch was sounded bringing in additional mutual aid, and nearly as quickly a 2nd Alarm was requested with considerable fire and very windy conditions present.

Quint and Engine 27 arrived and proceeded to force entry and stretch an 1 3/4" attack line into the fire building. Ladder 43 arrived as the first due truck company with Tower 53 arriving second and assuming the 2nd due ladder role. Tower 53 was ordered to the Alpha side of the row and established an aggressive position to allow for both Offensive and Defensive operations.

A 5" supply line was laid to Tower 53 for suppression activities; this line was laid and maintained by Quint 44.

As conditions continued to deteriorate, the evacuation tones were sounded and the incident was placed into an exterior operation. Tower 53 operated opening the "Loft" area and utilities its masters and reach to extinguish a large volume of fire.

A 3rd alarm was eventually struck to provide additional manpower and to begin to relieve crews. Tower 53 due to its versatility was repositioned and completed additional tasks before being released around 19:00 hrs.

A tremendous job was done by all companies at this scene; working in in cold temperatures with very windy conditions.
